Our Company
Situated in a beautiful forest in Qualicum Beach, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We travel around the world seeking the best coffee bean and tea to bring the best gourmet flavors to our customers.
All of us at Bean Awake tried our very best to create a beautiful atmosphere that is friendly, warm, relaxing and full of joy that just enhances the coffee experience.
Thelma’s excitement of sharing her expertise and explaining the subtle differences in the various flavours and how they are made, goes a long way in the fragile gifts the humble coffee bean has to offer. She brings the very best out of the beans and it truly is an experience on a different and higher level. Thelma’s thoughtfulness, expertise and love of coffee spills over in her presentation of her classy display.
Our Team
Dr. Thelma Zee is passionate about coffee and teas. She started her journey when she was in high school in learning the art of brewing the perfect cup of Chinese and Japanese Tea. She spend years fine tuning her tea making skills and have traveled around the world to bring to her customer the best quality teas she can find. She studied as a Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbalist and trained in New Zealand as a Chiropractor, and now teaching herbal foraging classes on Vancouver Island. She now combines her knowledge of herbalism with freeze drying technology to retain the maximum nutrient and medicinal properties. Dr. Thelma’s journey with coffee began when she was a chiropractic student in New Zealand where she was exposed to good quality coffee that is hard to find in Canada back in the days. In the quest to find good coffee, she realized she has to roast her own with the best quality beans she can find. During this process, she learned how to brew coffee with various methods, from pour-over v60s, cold brew to Areopress coffee, siphon coffee to espresso and latte making. She is continually testing different levels of coffee roast and tasting different micro-lot coffees to find the best method of brewing to bring out the best from the coffee beans she encounter.
Tina Sun is our Coffee Roastmaster. She has been manually and painstakingly been roasting coffee on an iron pan for 8 years. With our purchase of a professional coffee roaster, she is now able to combine her previous manual roasting experience to streamline the process. She can accurately roast each batch based on the colour of the beans and the cracks it makes during roasting.
Laura Ho is our Production & Customer Relations Manager where she takes care of each customers with understanding their coffee and tea needs and matches them with a coffee or tea they will enjoy. She packages each and every bag with care.
